The Women without Borders team traveled to Brussels to train ten new Mothers School trainers who will roll-out Mothers School groups in Brussels and Vilvoorde. The Mothers School train-the-trainer included psychologists, social workers, teachers, a former government official, expert mothers and grandmothers, and one dedicated young man who works as a counselor for youth at-risk of radicalization.
These Mothers Schools will bring together concerned and affected mothers to build confidence and capacity to address the threat of violent extremism. This is a particularly urgent need in Belgium where 350 youth have left to join ISIS. Of these 28 have been recruited from Vilvoorde, according to a recent estimate by the mayor. Mothers across Belgium are on high alert and are asking for support in their crucial role of protecting their children.
Belgium is the first of our European Mothers Schools, which are now being scaled-up across Europe. The next launch will be the Austrian Mothers School on October 1st in Vienna, followed by France, Sweden and England in 2016.
