Dr. Oliva M. Espín is Professor Emerita of Women's Studies at San Diego State University and Professor Emerita of Psychology at Alliant International University (California School of Professional Psychology-San Diego). She specializes in the psychology of Latinas, immigrant and refugee women, women's sexuality across cultures and qualitative research methodology. Dr. Espín trained psychotherapists and worked as a feminist therapist for twenty years before coming to San Diego in 1990. A native of Cuba, Dr. Espín has lived and worked in several countries. She received the 1991 Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution to Public Service, as well as an Award for Outstanding International Contributions to the Psychology of Women and Gender from the American Psychological Association. She has also received the 2001 Distinguished Career Award and distinguished publication awards from the Association for Women in Psychology for her book "Women Crossing Boundaries: A Psychology of Immigration and Transformations of Sexuality." She has published many articles and books including "Refugee Women and their Mental Health" and "Latina Realities: Essays on Healing, Migration, and Sexuality.”
